Around Town: Tinga Tinga Little Free Library
This week's post is a short one as I'm coming off the flu that I picked up from my Dad over the Thanksgiving holiday. So, I haven't dug too deeply into the back story of the Little Free Library box that caught my eye on N. Coalter St. a few weeks ago but, I did stop to take a few photos and find out a little bit about this vibrantly painted box. Links provided below!
This great little box is located in front of Pure Health Massage and Bodyworks at 512 B N. Coalter St. in Staunton. The owners decided to become a part of The Little Free Library after realizing that they were in the direct path of numerous children and adults walking to and from school, the YMCA, the grocery store and their homes. Pure Health wanted to offer a way for everyone to to have access to books of all kinds and asked artist and client Kate Delaney to paint the Little Library. Another client, the owner of Evermore Construction out of Harrisonburg, built the box for them.
The painting style of Tinga Tinga ia a part of the Ndonde, Tanzania mural art tradition. The Ndonde people decorate their huts with various pictures of animals and figures and the artistic style became famous when one of the members of the Ndonde tribe, Edward Saidi Tingatinga came to the city of Dar es Salaam in sixties. He decorated his house walls in Dar es Salaam as his family did in the Ngapa village, but he also started to paint the pictures with enamel colours on the ceiling boards. The style grew in popularity and became known as "tourist painting." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tingatinga_(painting)
